Magnet Safety

  1. Keep neodymium magnets away from all children. Neodymium magnets are not toys. Do not allow children to handle or play with them. Small magnets can pose a serious choking hazard. If multiple magnets are swallowed, they can attach to each other through intestinal walls causing serious injuries and even death.
  2. Keep neodymium magnets away from anyone with a pacemaker. Magnetic fields can affect the operation with pacemakers, ICDs and other implanted medical devices.
  3. Keep neodymium magnets away from magnetic media. The strong magnetic fields of neodymium magnets can damage items such as television, computer monitors, credit cards, bank cards, computers, diskettes and other data carriers, video tapes, mechanical watches, & hearing aids.
  4. Avoid contact with neodymium magnets if you have a nickel allergy. Studies show a small percentage of people suffer from an allergy to some metals including nickel. The allergic reaction is often manifested in redness and a skin rash. If you have a nickel allergy, try wearing gloves or avoid directly handling nickel-plated neodymium magnets.
  5. Neodymium magnet dust and powder are flammable. Under no circumstances should you try to machine Neodymium magnets! These rare earth magnets will crack, shatter and create a flammable toxic dust. Neodymium magnets will lose their magnetic properties if heated above (150 C).
  6. Neodymium magnets can corrode and wear down. Magnets are plated with a thin layer of nickel, nickel-copper-nickel or gold. This layer can wear down in the normal use of the magnet over time and/or corrode with exposure to moisture.
